The x-shaped snout is reminiscent of Tesla’s Model Y. At least somehow. And the rest of the Seal U is also sleek, no question. The Chinese quickly learn what appeals to European eyes. Accordingly, BYD is now launching an SUV after the sedan, the Seal U. SUVs are currently the hot cakes of car manufacturers. In any case, the “U” makes the difference in the naming.
Design: Ocean Line
The BYD-typical “Ocean Aesthetics” design line can also be seen on the Seal U.
The five-seater stretches 4.79 meters in length. The width (1.89 meters) and height (1.66 meters) are also considerable. This leaves plenty of space in the interior. The leather seats are neatly sewn and the foam-filled plastic of the paneling looks attractive. In the middle – depending on the equipment line – there is a huge 12.8 or 15.6 inch touchscreen. At the push of a button, the display rotates 90 degrees. From across to up – or vice versa.

The ambient lighting extends from door to door, the gear knob is made of crystal. The electric panoramic sunroof is standard. Two smartphones can be charged wirelessly at the same time, and four USB ports are distributed throughout the interior. The Seal U also has the V2L (Vehicle to Load) function: external devices (220 V) or electric cars can be charged.
The rear seat can be folded down 60:40, expanding the trunk from 552 to 1440 liters.

The Seal U does not use a lithium-ion battery, but rather a cobalt-free battery with blade technology. The battery pack is made up of many thin, elongated cells that actually look like fins. In addition, lithium iron phosphate (LFP) is used as a cathode material. The aim was to optimize safety, durability, longevity, performance and space utilization, say the Chinese, who will produce the SUV model in the new Szeged plant in Hungary.
Motor delivers 160 kW
BYD offers two battery sizes: 71.8 and 87 kWh respectively. This means the SUV can travel 420 or 500 kilometers (WLTP) on one charge. The electric motor does its job at the front and produces 160 kW (218 hp) in both versions. Charging power: 11 kW (AC) and 140 kW (DC). The BYD Seal U is coming to Austria in April. (heave)
