The accident occurred shortly after midnight on Mondsee Straße on Mondseeberg. A woman drove her car off the road between observation car park 2 and observation car park 1 for an unknown reason. The car shot across the steep embankment through a forest and a stream bed.
The vehicle knocked down a small tree and came to a stop on the embankment around 100 meters away. The impact triggered some airbags and the eCall, the car’s automatic emergency call system. The Tiefgraben, Guggenberg and Mondsee fire departments were alerted at 12:07 a.m.

Driver injured
The situation at the scene was initially dramatic for the emergency services: “When we arrived with the first vehicle, the accident car could be seen below Mondsee Strasse with its airbags deployed,” says operations manager Johannes Schwaighofer, commander of the Tiefgraben fire department. “We ran down the embankment together with our comrades from the Mondsee Red Cross. The driver was not trapped, but was lying on the floor of the vehicle in the passenger seat area,” said Schwaighofer.
Paramedics and first responders from the fire department treated the injured driver. The woman was then rescued with a basket stretcher over the steep embankment and taken to hospital.
The emergency services recovered the wreckage of the accident with the help of a tractor. After almost two hours, the 40 firefighters were able to complete their operation.
