Around 100 vehicles were involved in the incident between the Reggiolo (Reggio Emilia) and Carpi (Modena) exits, in which 25 people were injured, according to the emergency services. Three people were in mortal danger.
An accident between trucks shortly after 8 a.m. is believed to have triggered the collision, and the thick fog is said to have been partly responsible. Some people who were trapped in their vehicles were freed by firefighters. Traffic was stopped and toll booths from Mantua to Modena were closed.
Another pile-up on the A21
Another pile-up occurred on Monday on the A21 in Manerbio in the province of Brescia. Two people died and several others were injured, emergency services said. Several vehicles were involved, including two loaded car transporters. The victims were trapped in the vehicles. The rescue work was also difficult because of the fog.
