At the first meeting of the Linz Design Advisory Board, a new member was welcomed to the New Town Hall today. As announced, Hans Gangoly will strengthen the committee in the future; the advisory board is now formally fully staffed again with a total of four members. However, only three architects were present at yesterday’s meeting – in addition to Gangoly, Kathrin Gimmel and Carla Lo – Rüdiger Lainer apologized.

To kick things off, the plans for the Sisters of Mercy hospital site were presented and discussed for the third time today. In addition to conversions and renovations to the existing buildings, two new buildings are also planned to be built on the site.

One of them will be located in the Seilerstätte instead of the current forecourt, the second in Langgasse. For this purpose, an existing part of the building will be demolished. With the construction in the Seilerstätte, the entrance situation will be redesigned, the emergency access will be raised to ground floor level, and the entrance hall will be located there.

The façade design was recently controversial in the advisory board, and the design of Langgasse and the planned ramp there, including a soundproof wall for delivery and delivery purposes, were also criticized.

Traffic-calmed long street

The concerns were dispelled at today’s presentation by Moser Architects, and the advisory board members gave the green light on the third attempt.

At the suggestion and in coordination with the city’s mobility planning, Langgasse is to be traffic-calmed in sections and turned into a pedestrian zone. This means that individual motorized traffic can no longer access Herrenstrasse via Langgasse; in the future, this will be routed via Gesellenhausstrasse. The route to Herrenstrasse would therefore only be open to emergency vehicles, ambulances and delivery traffic. This solution increases the possibilities for greening the street area, and seating and bicycle parking spaces are also provided.

For planning councilor Dietmar Prammer (SP), the project has made a leap in quality with the revisions; he sees a win for all sides. On the one hand, medical care will be secured, and on the other hand, public spaces will be upgraded. Lorenz Potocnik (Linz+) sees it differently, he criticizes the ramp solution as a “bad symptom of a lack of urban planning”. If the building had been made just a few meters higher, the narrowness in the ground floor area would have been eliminated.

“Ensure supply of proven quality”

In any case, the project applicants are very happy that the plans have now been approved.
