The head of the German government stated this Monday that the rapprochement with the South American countries that make up Mercosur entails “growth prospects” for the EU, according to the AFP agency.

Scholz made these statements during a press conference with the French Prime Minister Gabriel Attalwho reiterated the opposition of France to this pact with Mercosur, since the French government, headed by the President Emmanuel Macronunderstands that “the required conditions are not met.”

Agrarian anger sweeps Europe

The agreement with Mercosur, negotiated for almost a quarter of a century, has unleashed harsh resistance from farmers in several European countries in recent days, including Germany and France, where they protest in search of higher income margins and new trading conditions.

European farmers fear that the completion of the potential agreement with Mercosur will put further downward pressure on the prices of their products, since the treaty aims to reduce import tariffs on industrial and pharmaceutical goods, mainly European, and Farm products.
