The first “Organic cobl” opened “Koblstattbauer” Peter Gadermaier in October 2019 on his property on Eberschwanger Straße on the outskirts of Ried. Gadermaier and his team run another self-service shop with food from the region in Tumeltsham.
A few days before Christmas, Gadermaier was informed by a notice from the Ried city office signed by Mayor Bernhard Zwielehner that from April 11, 2024, the structure would have to be removed without request within a period of four weeks. Reason: The building permit, which only serves temporary purposes, must not exceed a period of five years. The first notice issued became legally binding on April 11, 2019.

The office of the Upper Austrian state government has granted temporary approval for the establishment and operation of the organic food store until December 31, 2025. However, in this case the decision from the city office counts, at least temporarily. “We have filed a complaint with the State Administrative Court. However, we do not expect a verdict in the near future, so we have taken note of the decision”says Gadermaier when asked by OÖN.
“Tarnished Christmas”
He assumed that he would receive approval from the city for 2024 and 2025. “Our Christmas was very marred, the decision hit us hard, but we have to accept it. We actually hoped that we would get permanent approval at some point. After all, we still have our location in Tumeltsham, where the community makes us feel very welcome. We will have a little farewell party in Ried”he says “Koblstattbauer”.
“Limited construction method”
Ried’s mayor Bernhard Zwielehner cannot really understand Gadermaier’s surprise at the decision. “There is a building ban where the ‘Bio-Kobl’, which I actually like to shop at, is located because the route for the planned Clasp 3 has been marked there for decades. This was a limited construction process. The maximum approval period is five years”says Zwielehner. That’s why the city had to act this way, otherwise you would even be liable to prosecution. “If Mr. Gadermaier had set up his shop a few meters away, it wouldn’t have been a problem at all”says Zwielehner.
Whatever the case: In addition to the Billa branch on Stelzhamerplatz, which is due to close in the coming weeks, the city of Ried will soon lose another local supplier.
