A group from the Green Generation Plus recently visited the Karl Mostböck Archive in the former Steyrer Bergschule, entrance to Berggasse 4. The visitors were enthusiastic about the gem and would like to see even more guests and attention for the archive.

Karl Mostböck (1921–2013) lived and worked in Steyr from 1949. He started his career here as a commercial artist in the Steyr works. The style of Art Informel as well as Asian art, especially calligraphy, characterize large parts of his extensive work: drawings, graphics and paintings. Mostböck was honored with honorary citizenship of the city of Steyr and his birthplace Grein. The association founded in 2014 to promote Karl Mostböck’s life’s work opened the archive in 2021 in the former mountain school owned by the city. He is dedicated to archiving and scientifically processing his work as well as creating exhibitions and publications. Mostböck’s extensive collection of art books housed there is also impressive.

With the support of the collection of image and film documents accessible via screen, volunteers from the archive provide an insight into Karl Mostböck’s life and his perception by companions and representatives from the art world. In addition to the exemplary works of his artistic work, some very early works as well as incredibly clear technical representations for the Steyr works are particularly impressive.

Photorealistic drawings of truck engines not only show the beauty of complicated technical machines through insights into the interior of cylinders and construction details, but also make it easier to understand how they work.

The main part of the archive consists of the thousands of images of Mostböck’s life’s work, which are stored in professional storage cabinets and can only be viewed in parts, even when intensively studied.
