A 52-year-old from the Wels-Land district may have had several guardian angels on board while driving on the West Autobahn towards Vienna on Sunday. At around nine o’clock in the municipality of Eggendorf in the Traunkreis (Linz-Land district) the man lost control of his car on the rain-soaked road and went off the A1 to the right. His car crashed into the guard rail and overturned before ending up heavily damaged on its roof in a grassy area next to the highway.

“He was really lucky”
The force of the impact caused the car to be so deformed that the driver was unable to free himself from it. Police officers from the Haid highway police station were quickly on the scene: They broke a window on the passenger side and freed the 52-year-old from the wreckage. Red Cross paramedics provided first aid. “The driver came towards us. He was really lucky,” said the Red Cross operations manager.
