The boys – all between 17 and 18 years old and from the Vöcklabruck district – were on the way to the Hainbach-Süd motorway rest area on the western motorway after a carnival parade around 10.40 p.m. After the parade, they continued celebrating at home and wanted to get drinks and snacks from the vending machine at the rest area.
One of the boys, an 18-year-old from Regau, suddenly set off a firecracker and threw it into the men’s toilet of the rest area. But the toilet was not empty: a 16-year-old from the Tulln district was passing through with his parents and was currently in one of the cubicles. The boys tried to run away, but the 16-year-old’s father was just able to catch one of them and hold him until the police arrived. The 18-year-old who threw the firecracker then turned himself in to the police.
The 16-year-old complained of blast trauma, but was able to continue the journey with his family. The 18-year-old is at large on charges of assault and property damage.
