Upper Austria’s track and field athletes had a lot to celebrate at the all-around championships in Linz: seven out of eight possible titles were won. “This is very gratifying,” says Roland Werthner, President of the Upper Austrian Athletics Association (OÖLV), adding: “It shows that the all-around initiatives from the youth to the high-performance level are having an impact.”
Leo Lasch (general class), Simon Hummer (U20) and Julius Rudorfer (U18) triumphed in the men’s heptathlon – consisting of the disciplines 60 meter sprint, 60 meter hurdles, long jump, high jump, pole vault and shot put and the final 1000 meter run – all athletes from the Linz TGW Decathlon Union. “Now my all-around life really begins,” said Lasch from Scharnstein, securing his first national championship title with 5,439 points. And that in the first all-around competition after his hip operation.
With title “compensated”
In the U20 and U18 age groups, Hummer and Rudorfer successfully defended their titles from the previous year. In the final tally, the Leondinger Hummer was only one point short of the 4,800-point mark: “Unfortunately, the 4,800 points were just not enough, but the title and the personal best make up for it.”
In the women’s category, Verena Mayr (general class) from Ebensee and Welser talent Olivia Benesch (U18) won the pentathlon competition. Only in the U20 did Upper Austria have to give way to Tyrolean Alma Kathan. However, the decathlon union duo Sophia Höfer and Franziska Pichler followed in second and third place.
In the team rankings for both men and women, the decathlon union was at the top.
No time to take a breather
Upper Austria’s all-around athletes have no time to catch their breath, as the state championships in the individual disciplines are scheduled for the weekend. Then they want to fight for victory again in the Linz TipsArena.
