At the invitation of the Lions Club, the topic of dementia from different perspectives will be the focus of an information evening on Wednesday, March 6th, at 7:30 p.m. in the Gasthaus Post in Peilstein. Primaria Romana Palmanshofer, head of acute geriatrics and remobilization at the Rohrbach Clinic, and Karin Höfer, qualified health and nursing specialist in dementia and discharge management at the Rohrbach Clinic, will speak. Notary Clemens Ettmayer, Lions member and notary partner in the public notary’s office in Neufelden, explains the legal part. The event will be moderated by Primary Wolfgang Tenschert, Lions member and medical director at Rohrbach Hospital until February 29th. Admission is free. The Rohrbach-Böhmerwald Lions Club is instead asking for donations to support social projects in the district. Registration is not required. Dementia is more relevant than ever; the disease is one of the most common neuropsychiatric diseases in older people. Primaria Romana Palmanshofer: “Dementia is based on a disease of the brain with disruption of many cortical functions such as memory, thinking, orientation, comprehension, language and judgment.” The number of cases of the disease is expected to double worldwide in the next 20 years.
Everyday life is changing
“Changes in the everyday life of people with dementia can become a major challenge for both those affected and their relatives,” says Karin Höfer and adds: “Learning the right handling and communication techniques can make everyday life much easier.” During the lecture, the most important legal questions in connection with the loss of the ability to make decisions will be examined by the notary Clemens Ettmayer: “Many people are not aware that in the event of the loss of the ability to make decisions, the next of kin are not automatically appointed as representatives. Only in the event that If precautions are not taken in a timely manner, a representative can be appointed by the court.”
