The Municipality of Maldonado began the relocation of the 530 people from the Kennedy settlement, in Punta del Este, and the first six houses have already been delivered.

The rest will receive the properties throughout 2024, but the objective is to end the year with all family groups relocated, including the only family that still refuses to abandon the settlement installed 60 years ago, and with which the mayor still communicates. find yourself negotiating.

After the completion of the relocation, the Kennedy homes will be demolished and the property will be cleaned and then sold in 2025, in which the department of Maldonado He expects them to be good figures due to the good location of the land. In turn, the money from the sale will be used to amortize part of the 55 million dollars that the State requested in loan to build the new neighborhood.

A historic day

Prior to the inauguration ceremony of the relocation, Mayor Enrique Antía witnessed the demolition of the first house in the Kennedy settlement, and referred to the event as “a historic day for Maldonado, in which the quality of people’s lives begins to improve.”

So far, 11 houses in the neighborhood have already been demolished to prevent them from being occupied and the settlement from returning.

According to Antía, the construction of the new neighborhood for the 530 families is an “immense social project” that is carried out with the acceptance of all the neighbors and “a lot of effort.”

Also present at the event was the pre-candidate of the Laura Raffo National Partywhich he also described as “a historic day for the department of Maldonado and for the entire country” the first day of relocation.
