International Women’s Day on March 8th has a very special meaning for the Braunau Red Cross. In 1883, 15 women founded the “Patriotic Women’s Aid Association of the Red (sic) Cross” in the Braunau district.

The association initially had four members in the city, and there were 82 in the entire district. At that time, one of the four tasks already seemed to be the “receipt and distribution (sic) of voluntary donations for the residents of Upper Austria damaged by floods”. The presidency of the Red Cross in the Braunau district was initially held by four women, including Baroness Flora von Handel zu Hagenau.

More than half female

A lot has happened since then; today, of around 1,150 Red Cross employees in the Braunau district, 602 are women, 502 of whom are involved in voluntary work. The reasons for this are diverse. “I wanted a meaningful hobby,” says Eva Hattinger from Lengau, who started with the visiting service. Hattinger is now also a paramedic in the Mattighofen local office and is also the contact person for interested parties. Among these was Georg Hattinger, the father of the committed Red Cross employee.

Daniela Eder from Altheim only recently started working again. The mother of two children was recently on maternity leave. “I can’t and don’t want to take off this red uniform. Of course it takes time to complete the service. That means less time together with the family. Nevertheless, I don’t want to simply give up the years of experience, training and the friendships and experiences that have arisen Hang on. As long as I can, I want to keep going out of love for people,” says Eder. She now has a very close friendship with Julia Hoffmann and the duo (photo above) completes most of their duties together.

“We are very proud of our volunteers,” says Daniela Renker from Uttendorf. Renker coordinates the rescue service in the entire Braunau district and is of course also the first point of contact for the male officers.
