When it comes to the quality of training of doctors, Upper Austria performed best compared to the federal states. This was the result of the nationwide evaluation carried out for the first time in 2023 by the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (ETH) in Zurich. “ETH has been doing this in Switzerland for 20 years and we cannot be accused of bias”said Harald Mayer, Federal Curia Chairman of employed doctors in the Austrian Medical Association, at a press conference on Friday.
Small departments performed better
A total of 90 questions in eight subject areas asked about medical training; doctors in Upper Austria rated the quality best overall with an average of 4.61. Grading follows the Swiss system, where six is the best grade. “We have a great interest in maintaining high quality and giving doctors the best conditions”emphasizes Franz Harnoncourt, chairman of the Upper Austrian Health Holding (OÖG).
The study shows that small departments generally performed better than large departments with many rotating doctors. Cornelia Sitter, rotating doctor representative of the Upper Austrian Medical Association, attributes this to the more intensive care options. “The 1:1 teaching model shows its strength”says Sitter, who is training to be a general practitioner “greatest need to catch up” sees.
Federal Curia Chairman Mayer is worried about the Austria-wide response rate of only 44.3 percent. In Upper Austria, 714 of 1,333 questionnaires (54 percent) were returned. “In Switzerland, 70 percent of products are returned in the same study. We should also get to this level”says Mayer, who hopes that the questionnaires recently sent out for the training evaluation in 2024 will be filled out more often.
