Linz is planning higher taxes for betting terminals

The city of Linz’s entertainment tax code stipulates a tax of 170 euros per month per device for betting terminals. The levy has existed at this level since 2017. The Oo. However, the state’s entertainment tax law allows a maximum amount of 250 euros per device. The city of Linz now wants to exploit this framework.

“Gambling machines have a high addictive potential with fatal effects on the lives of those affected and their families. Therefore, the tax on betting terminals in Linz should be significantly increased to the currently possible maximum of 250 euros,” announced Vice Mayor Tina Blöchl (SP). The step makes sense. Other Upper Austrian cities would also make full use of this option.

Up to 160,000 euros more

There are currently 168 betting terminals in operation in the Linz city area. This number could decrease in the future if taxes are higher, but the municipal department still expects significant additional revenue for the city. Based on the current number of betting terminals, this would bring around 160,000 euros more into the city’s coffers per year; instead of 340,000 euros, around 500,000 euros would then be collected.

The draft for the corresponding amendment to the amusement tax regulations will be discussed in the finance committee on Tuesday, March 12th and will be presented to the local council for a resolution on March 21st.
