The three were finally found by mountain rescuers on Saturday morning at 3,150 meters above sea level. They had set up an emergency bivouac. The Germans were exhausted but remained unhurt, police said. The young tourers from Bavaria were finally accompanied by rescue workers to the Johanneshütte and then flown by emergency helicopter to the Prägraten mountain rescue base in East Tyrol, it was said. They were previously found in the area of the “upper entrance” to Rainerkees.

Followed false leads
The Germans had already had a long “odyssey” behind them. On Friday morning they wanted to climb from the Kürsingerhütte to the summit of the Großvenediger (3,657 m) on the Salzburg side and then descend back towards the Kürsingerhütte. Because they were following the tracks of another ski mountaineer due to lack of orientation, they deviated from the route and headed towards Gschlösstal. The man was not heading towards the Kürsinger Hütte but towards the Matreier Tauernhaus – on the other side of the mountain. It was only below the Old Prager Hut that the error became clear in a conversation with the ski mountaineer in question.

Despite the bad weather, the trio decided to climb back towards the Venedigerscharte. They probably got lost again in the thick fog and headed towards Defreggerhaus (Praegraten, Tyrol). After the alpinists did not return to the hut as planned at 7 p.m., the search operation was finally initiated. Emergency services from the Prägraten mountain rescue service and the Alpine police climbed from Hinterbichl towards the Johannishütte, while those from the Neukirchen mountain rescue service climbed from the Salzburg side towards the Kürsingerhütte.
