Nigeria: More than 200 kidnapped children and school workers released
The children and school staff were kidnapped from this school in Kuririga, Nigeria.

They were unhurt, the Kaduna state governor’s office said on Sunday. The coordinator was the National Security Advisor. The Nigerian army must also be thanked. No further details were initially given.

The kidnappers had demanded a ransom of around 640,000 euros. The government refused to pay.

Abducted two weeks ago

The children and school staff were abducted by unknown armed men on March 7th in a remote town in northwestern Nigeria. It was the first mass kidnapping in Africa’s most populous country since 2021. At that time, 150 schoolchildren were abducted. Ten years ago, the Islamist group Boko Haram began attacking schools and abducting children.

Kidnappings of individuals or small groups are almost a daily occurrence in Nigeria, especially in the north of the country. Behind this are criminal gangs who want to extort ransom money. Relatives often have to sacrifice their savings or sell land and livestock to be able to raise the sum.
