Natural Night: Bringing no light into the darkness

Natural Night: Bringing no light into the darkness
The darkest areas of Austria should remain dark in the future.

The border triangle between Styria, Lower Austria and Upper Austria is one of the regions in Europe that is least affected by light pollution. In order to preserve this original quality of the night sky and thus also the biodiversity and habitats, a cross-state natural night area is to be established.

For this purpose, the Kalkalpen and Gesäuse national parks, the Dürrenstein-Lassingtal wilderness area and the Steirische Eisenwurzen and Ötscher-Tormäuer nature parks are cooperating. Together with the University of Vienna, the ECO Institute and the environmental umbrella organization, they have made it their mission to preserve the night sky and counteract light pollution. To this end, a certified protected area, similar to the Attersee-Traunsee Star Park, is to be created across federal states. “We protect the darkest areas of Austria and connect communities, federal states and protected areas so that the negative effects of light pollution on the environment and people are prevented in the long term,” says Jan Wieczor, “Natural Night Area” project manager at the environmental umbrella organization.
