France: No discrimination based on hairstyle
France’s National Assembly is discussing hair today

The members of the National Assembly are today debating a draft law according to which discrimination in the workplace “because of the hairstyle, the color, the length or the texture of the hair” can be punished with a fine or even a prison sentence.

The motion was submitted by MP Olivier Serva from the splinter party LIOT. Around 60 MPs from several parties signed the initiative, which could indicate relatively strong support in the National Assembly.

Critics of the initiative point out that a ban on discrimination based on physical appearance is already anchored in French labor law. The supporters of the law explain that it is not about expanding, but rather clarifying the cases of discrimination already mentioned in the law. “It’s useful to name some phenomena even if they’re not new,” Serva said.

In France, the case of an Air France flight attendant who, after a ten-year process, was allowed to wear Afro braids recently caused a stir.
