Tennis hopes are rising for Mauthausen

Two teenagers, of whom quite a few experts are convinced that they will have a significant impact on the future of tennis in Austria, officially joined Union Stein&Co on Friday. Mauthausen: Joel Schwärzler (18) and Matthias Ujvary (19). The two will be playing for the Mühlviertler in the men’s Bundesliga this year, as will 17-year-old Nico Hipfl, another top local talent.

“We want to have a say in the championship title. After narrowly failing in the last two seasons, we are making a new attempt this year,” says Mauthausen sports director Andreas Pilsl, who, in addition to the young wave, also relies on Dennis Novak and Filip Misolic The Hungarian world-class players Fabian Marozsan and Zsombor Piros can count. In addition, Alexander Erler is one of the best doubles specialists in the Mauthausen team. “Our goal this year was to make the squad as broad as possible so that we could start with a good line-up in every round,” says Mauthausen’s team captain Hannes Pühringer. Because for the club it is clear: Tennis remains an individual sport and if the players go far in ATP tournaments, the Bundesliga has to take a step back.

When docking in Mauthausen, team spirit also played a role, Schwärzler said on Friday: “When you’re in the middle of a difficult match, it helps when your colleagues cheer you on from the box.” The club also played an important role in a sponsorship deal for Schwärzler, Ujvary and Hipfl: the energy storage specialist SKE plans to support the talents in the long term. “Especially getting started on the professional tour is difficult and involves a lot of costs. We want to help so that the boys can take their next development step,” says SKE sales director Gerald Hotz.

Union Stein&Co will play their first Bundesliga game in 2024. Mauthausen at home against Dornbirn on Saturday, May 18th. Given the numerous prominent names in the squad, Pilsl is also expecting a number of fans at the home games: “You only see such talent at international tournaments. With us they play practically on our doorstep.”
