A man is in serious condition after being attacked by a wild monkey

A 37-year-old man is in critical condition after being attacked by a wild monkey and contracting the deadly B virusbecoming the first human case recorded in Hong Kong. On March 21, she was admitted to Yan Chai Hospital with fever and decreased consciousness.

After performing a cerebrospinal fluid testconfirmed that the man had virus B, known as “simiae virus.”

The first case of B virus was recorded in a human who was attacked by a wild monkey in Hong Kong.

After knowing the diagnosis, an investigation began into how he became infected and it was found out that he was in contact with wild monkeys on an excursion in the Kam Shan Parkwhere he suffered injuries.

The truth is that the park is home to a large number of monkeys. macaques, which represents almost 85% of wild monkeys in the region. By being in contact with visitors, these animals became dependent on human food, so they became aggressive and prone to attack to get food.

Due to the patient’s serious health condition, health authorities began working to contain the spread of the virus. In that sense, epidemiological control was intensified and they are investigating which wild monkey was that attacked the man.

What is the B virus and what are the symptoms?

Generally, the B virus does not manifest symptoms, however, in rare cases, the virus can be fatal in humans who had mucosal or percutaneous contact with the saliva or body fluids of monkeys. The disease can be transmitted through bites, scratches, splashes or needle sticks.

The incubation period of the B virus in people can appear between 3 and 7 days after contact with the monkey until a month later. The symptoms are similar to those of the flu and can manifest nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, hiccups or swollen lymph nodes.

The first confirmed case of virus B was in Beijing, China, in the year 2021. The victim was a 53-year-old veterinarian who worked at an institution dedicated to researching animals. A month after dissecting two monkeys, He developed symptoms and died.
