The Sankt Lorenz and Mondsee fire departments were alerted to the B154, Mondsee Straße, at 9:45 p.m. There was a serious traffic accident involving four cars at the entrance to Scharfling (municipality of Sankt Lorenz).
A 62-year-old from the Salzburg area was driving his car on the B154 from Sankt Gilgen towards Mondsee. As witnesses reported, the man was traveling at too high a speed. After the Scharfling area, the 62-year-old crossed into the oncoming lane. After initially brushing against two vehicles, he collided head-on with the car of a 21-year-old from the Salzburg-surroundings district.
“When we arrived at the scene of the accident, we first had to get an overview, as the four vehicles involved in the accident were widely scattered on the B154,” reports the operations manager of the St. Lorenz fire department, Wolfgang Schachl, of a “confusing field of rubble.”
Not wearing a seatbelt
The 62-year-old, who was not wearing a seatbelt and did not have a valid driver’s license, died at the scene of the accident. One person was taken to hospital by the Red Cross.
After being completely closed for several hours, the federal highway was reopened to traffic. The firefighters ended the operation at 12:50 a.m. A total of 52 emergency services from the fire department, Red Cross and police were on duty.
