According to spokesman Andreas Zenker, around 40 people – primarily students – came into contact with fumes. There were complaints about nausea and respiratory irritation. It was initially unclear which substances were involved.

According to police spokeswoman Manuela Weinkirn, the incident occurred at lunchtime. According to them, two girls and a boy were among the people taken to the hospital for medical care. All children present were subjected to a health check and then handed over to their parents.

Localization: Payerbach is located near Reichenau an der Rax.

As the “NÖN” (“Niederösterreichische Nachrichten”) reported online, a routine experiment may have been carried out at school. As a result, the concentration of vapors is said to have reached or exceeded a critical level, said Zenker from the Red Cross to the APA. The new middle school and the neighboring elementary school were evacuated as a precaution, emphasized Mayor Jochen Bous in an interview with ORF Lower Austria.

The Red Cross was deployed with nine vehicles. According to Zenker, three emergency doctors and the crisis intervention team were also on site. The fire department also responded; according to district commander Josef Huber, the priority task was to ventilate the property.
