The stated goal is clear: with the redesign of the city bus concept in Traun, the public transport offering should be made significantly more attractive and thus take into account the wishes expressed by a large part of the Traun population in the citizen survey, says Mayor Karl-Heinz Koll (VP ).
The route of the four planned lines will differ from the current ones: three of the four lines will lead to the Traun intersection in the future, thus improving the connection to the existing tram lines 3 and 4. In addition, it is planned to develop new areas such as (Old) Sankt Martin and to increase access to Traun train station in order to make it easier to switch from bus to train (see grafic). Operating hours are planned every half hour: Monday to Friday from 5:30 a.m. to 7 p.m., Saturday from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m

Transport City Councilor Eva May-Paulischin (SP) is convinced that the new route will make inner-city traffic fit for the future. State Mobility Councilor Günther Steinkellner (FP) sees around 40 percent more timetable kilometers than before and a clear focus on user-friendliness with the concept significant progress achieved. Part of this is also the partial conversion to an electric bus fleet, which is due to a new federal regulation. Five of the seven buses will be electrically operated.
“Increase quality of life”
“By using electric buses, we are supporting the city in switching to environmentally friendly mobility and thus increasing the quality of life,” emphasizes State Governor Thomas Stelzer (VP). Vice mayor and member of the state parliament Herwig Mahr (FP) is also convinced of the new concept, saying that the people of Traun will be offered an “effective and environmentally friendly mobility offer”.
However, there will be no electric buses at the planned start in December 2025. Unfortunately, this will not be possible due to delivery times, says Koll. We will therefore start with a purely diesel bus fleet.
The state will contribute a maximum of 4.75 million euros
Two thirds of the financing of the new city bus is provided by the city of Traun, one third is covered by the state, whose contribution is capped at 4.75 million euros. The currently forecast total costs for the operating period of 7.5 years are around 12.7 million euros. In addition, the city of Traun still has to raise money for necessary renovations. The future operator of the city bus has not yet been determined; he is being sought through a tender.
It is already clear that the new buses, at 8.5 meters long, will be significantly smaller than the current ones; they will have space for 24 passengers. Koll justifies this “downsizing” primarily by saying that the large buses have caused many problems in the residential areas. The mayor expects the realignment to result in a significant increase in passenger numbers and thus ease the burden on the roads. A total of 147,021 passengers were counted in 2022.
