Austria’s most promising medal candidate is skipping the European Judo Championships

Michaela Polleres

Without Olympic silver medalist Michaela Polleres, Austria’s team for the European Championships is missing.

The third in Linz will be spared for the European Championships given the density of upcoming major events – European Championships, World Cups and the Olympics within less than four months.

“For Michi, it’s about going home with an Olympic medal at the end. So the build-up for her is more long-term,” explains judo team leader Yvonne Snir-Bönisch at a press conference on Friday.

Fara and Scharfetter are also missing

There are also two short-term absences: Aaron Fara injured his knee at the Grand Prix in Linz, but should be fit for the upcoming major events. “This is a precautionary measure with regard to the World Cup,” says Snir-Bönisch.

Thomas Scharfetter’s Olympic dream has shattered. The Salzburger severed the extensor tendons of his thumb and index finger in an accident at work.

Worries about Shamil Borchashvili: The Olympic bronze medalist was unable to fully participate in the preparations for the European Championship. “He probably has an infection,” says the sports director about Welser, who was seeded number three. He should be fit for the European Championships.
