More than 15 days alive did not last, Zubía assured in reference to police corruption

The deputy of Colorado Party and former presidential candidate Uruguay, Gustavo Zubía, He stated that he would not last “more than 15 days alive” if he were Minister of the Interior due to police corruption; and criticized the government’s current management of security.

“If I am Minister of the Interior, I live for more than 15 days, I don’t last. Don’t worry,” said the former prosecutor on the program Desayunos Informales on Channel 12. “Because it is a ministry where you have to put a knife inside and out. And sometimes more knife inside than knife outside. And sometimes it is more dangerous to put a knife inside than a knife outside. Which the recent Interior Ministers have not done,” he added, making two ideas clear.

On the one hand, his dissatisfaction with the behavior of those who have passed—and are—in the portfolio currently directed by Nicolás Martinelli; and, on the other, the existence of police corruption, as he confirmed when he was specifically asked if that was what he was referring to.

“As a prosecutor, I have requested numerous prosecutions of police officers and police officers. Corruption is a phenomenon that invades all branches of this society in which we live. Is there corruption in the political system? I have no evidence, I believe there is. Is there corruption? corruption in administrative systems? Is there corruption in Customs? Is there corruption in technical services? Please, my friend,” continued Zubía, who was a prosecutor for almost 40 years before entering politics at the hands of the Colorado Party.

Likewise, the deputy insisted that the government “cannot” combat “corruption in prison” because it would entail an “electoral cost.” “The governments, this one, the previous one, have not been able to deal with the Uruguayan prison system. They have not been able to. Or they have not wanted to,” added Zubía, for whom this is an issue that deserves “immediate treatment.”

Zubía’s support for Ojeda

Last Wednesday, Zubía announced the decline of his pre-candidacy within the Colorado party in support of Andrés Ojeda, which is emerging as one of the surprises of the June elections, in an apparent resolution against Robert Silva.

“I fear that by not making agreements within the most neighboring sectors from an ideological point of view, Robert Silva could win the pre-candidacy,” Zubía had advanced, pointing out that the former president of the They code “represents a center-left within the party.” “It is the one with which I have the greatest ideological and pragmatic differences,” he explained.

One of the points of agreement between the former prosecutor and the lawyer was security and first-hand knowledge about crime. “There is a basic topic that with Andrés we both have knowledge: the topic security. It is vital for the country, it reaches 48% in citizen surveys and their concern,” Zubía said at the press conference he called to communicate the decision.

The intention to contribute “a share of realism to these issues”, as well as to bring to Colorado Party to lead security policies after not having participated in the last 20 years, are issues that united the new partners within the Colorado Intern.
