In Vietnam, a court recently sentenced real estate magnate Truong My Lan to death. It’s about a financial fraud case involving more than eleven billion euros. Lan, chief executive of real estate developer Van Thinh Phat Holdings Group, was found guilty of embezzlement, bribery and violating banking regulations, according to state media reports. Even before the verdict was announced, a family member said Lan would appeal. Now they said they would keep fighting and see what they could do.

The trial began on March 5 and ended earlier than planned. It is part of the fight against corruption that the leader of the ruling Communist Party, Nguyen Phu Trong, has been promising to eradicate for years. According to investigators, Lan and her accomplices were accused of diverting 11.3 billion euros over more than four years from the Saigon Joint Stock Commercial Bank (SCB), which they de facto controlled through dozens of authorized representatives.
