The “Nerazzurri” with Marko Arnautovic won the “Scudetto” five rounds before the end of the season. As their first pursuer, Milan can no longer catch up with their arch-rivals and are now 17 points behind. For Arnautovic it is the second championship title with Inter, he won his first in 2010 at the age of 21. The Black and Blues achieved the triple under Jose Mourinho.
Coach Simone Inzaghi’s team won the “Derby della Madonnina” in the sold-out San Siro thanks to goals from Francesco Acerbi (18th) and Marcus Thuram (49th). Milan only managed to score again through Fikayo Tomori (80′). It was Inter’s sixth derby win in a row. Doubly bitter for the “Rossoneri”: their rivals have now also claimed one more championship title. Inter were last champions in 2021, while Milan won the 19th championship in club history in 2022.
Acerbi gave Inter the lead
Only a win would have helped Milan keep their theoretical chance of winning the title. However, Inter’s defensive pillar Acerbi struck from a set piece. A corner was headed, and the national player had no problem heading it in, unchallenged. Striker Lautaro Martinez missed to make it 2-0 from a few meters before Milan’s Rafael Leao was denied by Yann Sommer after half an hour. The Swiss also saved his team from equalizing against Davide Calabria at the end of the first half.
Inter could also have easily added another goal. Thuram also narrowly missed a goal. The Frenchman made up for this shortly after the break with a powerful shot into the near corner from the edge of the penalty area. Inter, who only conceded 18 goals in 33 rounds, initially didn’t allow anything defensively before Milan came up again. The advanced Matteo Gabbia failed because of Sommer, Tomori was dusted. Inter then defended the result with some effort over time. Inter’s Denzel Dumfries and Milan’s Theo Hernandez each saw red after a scramble in stoppage time, and Calabria also saw red for assault.
