Out of 185 countries, Austria ranks 11th among the most popular work locations worldwide, according to a study carried out by the consulting firm Boston Consulting Group (BCG) together with the job exchange Stepstone. This is an improvement of four places compared to the last survey in 2020.
However, there is a need for improvement when it comes to visas and work permits. “With its high quality of life, Austria holds a trump card in the global competition for the brightest minds. It would be a mistake to gamble away this advantage through complicated immigration procedures,” said Heike Dorninger, partner and head of the Vienna BCG office. Companies should proactively provide support with bureaucratic hurdles.
Vienna ranks 23rd among cities
When viewed by city, the federal capital Vienna has fallen to 23rd place in popularity among international job seekers. In 2020, Vienna took 22nd place in the city ranking, and in 2018 it was 13th. In total, more than 150,000 employees were surveyed for the “Decoding Global Talent” study, 1,700 of them in Austria.
However, the survey shows that respondents in Austria are significantly less willing to leave the country for a job. Less than half would want to work abroad and just under 11 percent are currently actively looking for a job outside of Austria. Austrians are most likely to go to Germany and Switzerland to work, followed by the USA and Italy. Austria, in turn, is a particularly attractive country for people from Hungary (36 percent), Bosnia and Herzegovina (30 percent), Slovenia (22 percent), Serbia (20 percent) and Germany (14 percent).
London ahead of Amsterdam and Dubai
At the top of the ranking is Australia, followed by the USA and Canada. London takes first place among cities, ahead of Amsterdam and Dubai. “Despite global challenges such as geopolitical tensions, persistent inflation and fears of recession, according to the study, around a quarter of respondents are actively looking for work opportunities abroad,” it said. However, the proportion of people who would generally be open to moving abroad for a job has decreased to 63 percent. Before the corona pandemic in 2018, this proportion was 78 percent.
