At around 6 a.m., the Puchenau fire department was alerted to a fire on Schulstrasse. “When we got there, we could already see that there was a lot of smoke coming from the basement,” says operations manager Patrick Voit in an interview with OÖNachrichten. The kindergarten in Puchenau is located directly above the basement, which is used as a youth center. “We then went into the building with several respiratory protection teams. There were also very noticeable signs of a break-in,” said the operations manager. The burglar(s) may have forced their way into the youth building during the night and then set off several smoke bombs there. “For me it turned out like Bengal,” says Voit.
Kindergarten operations not disrupted
The fire department was able to reopen the building around 7 a.m. “The children only saw a few fire engines, otherwise they didn’t notice anything about the operation and can now attend kindergarten as normal,” says Voit.
The Puchenau fire department was on duty with 29 people, supported by a respiratory protection team from the Ottensheim fire department.
