Managers at the South Korean company will now have to work six days a week instead of five. The newspaper “Korean Economic Daily” reported this, citing company representatives.
Samsung has had a mixed year in 2023, with some business areas falling short of expectations. Samsung Electronics, whose main business is semiconductors, made an operating loss of $11 billion last year. The “Device Solutions” division, which is dominated by semiconductors, accounts for around four fifths of Samsung’s revenue. The company is also suffering from the sharp decline in the value of the South Korean won, rising oil prices and high borrowing costs. Samsung’s calculation is that the extra work will result in more profits.
Service on Saturday or Sunday
Managers in the production and sales departments can therefore choose whether they want to work extra on Saturday or Sunday. The schedule has been in effect since last week. However, the measure is not entirely new internally: since the beginning of the year, managers from the Samsung CT Corp., Samsung Heavy Industries Co. and E&A Co. divisions have been working voluntarily six days a week instead of five.
