Lots of smoking children in Europe

Anyone who lights a cigarette in Turin must keep a distance of at least 5 meters from others.

The World Health Organization (WHO) is “alarmed” about the consumption of alcohol and e-cigarettes among 11 to 15 year olds. Urgent action is needed, the European branch of the WHO said in a report published yesterday.

Widespread use of harmful substances among children is a “serious threat” to public health, said Hans Kluge, WHO regional director for Europe. He called for higher taxes, a restriction on points of sale and advertising and a ban on flavorings. The WHO report is based on data from 280,000 teenagers aged 13 to 15 in Europe, Central Asia and Canada. 57 percent of 15-year-olds drank alcohol at least once. Almost one in four young people of that age said they had drunk alcohol at least once in the past 30 days. Among eleven-year-olds it was eight percent of boys and five percent of girls.
