The brand new Minister of Labor and Social Security, Mario Arizti, assured that the eventual approval of a law on the reduction of working hours in Uruguay “It has to leave room for collective bargaining,” noting that “it is an issue that is debated worldwide.”
After assuming ownership of the portfolio he left behind Pablo Mieres To dedicate himself to the campaign, Arizti was consulted about the possibility of a reduction in the workload in the world of work, although he tied that concept to the productivity.
“It is a topic that is always on the table. We were more in favor of organizing work time or compensating with days of rest, different from what happens with reductions. But, if a law is passed, it has to leave room for Collective negotiation”, the hierarch pointed out.
Arizti pointed out that “it is the actors who know what is useful to them” and lamented that “there is a bill that treats everyone equally and that is not a good thing”, contrasting that it is better “for the parties to dialogue and adapt the schedules so that it adapts to the company and productivity.”
In this regard, he recalled that “there is a group working on productivity that has been working very well in a tripartite manner” and anticipated that the objective is “to reach a document near the end of the year and that a next administration can use it as input for negotiations.” .

Mario Arizti’s view on the PIT-CNT plebiscite
On the other hand, Arizti was consulted about the PIT-CNT plebiscite against social security reform, which he described as “a serious problem for Uruguayan society and workers, if approved.”
Regarding the initiative, he considered that “it will increase the public spending considerably” and pointed out that “social security must be looked at from various points of view,” pointing out that it will take resources away from problems such as poverty or youth unemployment.
“If the trajectory of public spending skyrockets, as the studies of the BPS, This takes resources away from important issues. Young people are harmed,” confirmed the new minister. Finally, he stressed that, beyond the differences with the PIT-CNT, the dialogue with social actors will be maintained, something he described as the main task of the portfolio.
