“You also have to stick to the rules when it comes to customs. For me, the rules of the rural youth are a measure of how customs are lived in our region,” says Mayor Penn. He demands that the maypole crew have a maypole again in Eferding “There will be no trigger for me, especially not for a broken maypole,” he says. The Eferding maypole had previously been stolen by the Oftering-Wilhering rural youth group and was also redeemed by the municipality.

Christian Mühleder from the Maypole crew sees it differently; the rules of rural youth are not a benchmark for him. “The maypole rules that we have been handed down allow stealing the maypole in the first three and last three days of May,” he says. The crew’s Eferdingen maypole fell over tonight and broke. They are willing to put up a new maypole in exchange for a release. He still hopes for a positive result from the talks with the city boss.
