The 71-year-old, who describes himself as an “egg-collecting addict”, was sentenced to twelve weeks’ probation on Friday. He was exposed when he was filmed by a wildlife camera stealing two eggs from a nightjar’s nest in the eastern English county of Norfolk in June 2023.

During a search of his apartment, officers then found several more eggs, including those from endangered birds such as the linnet, greenfinch, yellowhammer and house sparrow.
Treatment and compensation
“We believe the case is so serious that it exceeds the custodial threshold, but given the realistic prospect of rehabilitation we will suspend the sentence,” Judge Matthew Watts said at the sentencing hearing in the city of Norwich. He also sentenced the man to 12 months of psychiatric treatment and several hundred pounds in compensation.
The 71-year-old has already been imprisoned twice in the past after several thousand eggs were found on him. Prosecutor Josephine Jones said the man was not interested in financial gain, but in trophies.
