Controversy with forestry companies over the use of rural roads that led to the road emergency

The mayor of Paysandu, Nicolas Oliveraand forestry companies that operate in the department, among which is UPMhave exchanged accusations in the last week for the use of rural roads during adverse weather conditions.

“Falling water and a little sign that tells you that you cannot circulate. And then someone gets upset if I say that those from UPM are daring,” she posted.

The situation led to the statement by the Ministry of Transportation and Public Works (MTOP) of the road emergency last Friday. After the declaration, the Executive Branch determined an amount of 15 million extra dollars for the repair of damaged rural roads.

However, the forestry companies did not hide their discomfort with the mayor’s statements and the decision of the MTOP and they spoke out through a statement in which they accuse them of applying measures to a single productive sector.

According to the text of the Society of Forest Producers (SPF)only 15% of Paysandú’s rural roads are used by companies in the sector.

“Unfortunately, in recent days we have seen how the Paysandú Municipality has expressed an arbitrary position towards the forestry sector with respect to the use of this,” reads the statement in which they warn of an “impact that the agroforestry productive chain with this regulation.”
