Kim died on Tuesday at the age of 94 from old age and the consequences of multiple organ failure, the state media in the largely isolated country reported on Wednesday. As director of the ruling Workers’ Party’s propaganda and agitation department, Kim served under three rulers. Kim was once notorious in South Korea, where he was compared to the Nazi propaganda minister Joseph Goebbels.
He was therefore also known as the “Goebbels of North Korea”. According to reports, a state funeral is being prepared for the deceased. Leader Kim Jong-un visited the bier with the former party secretary and “work hero” to express his heartfelt condolences. Kim Ki-nam played an “outstanding role in completely creating the monolithic leadership system of deserving comrade Kim Jong-un,” it said. Kim Jong-un is the grandson of the “eternal President” Kim Il-sung and son of the former ruler Kim Jong-il, who died at the end of 2011.
Huge influence
Kim Ki-nam served at the party headquarters for more than four decades, the experts at the North Korea Leadership Watch website wrote during his lifetime. Accordingly, he exercised enormous influence “over the country’s press, media, fine arts and publishing industry.” He also played a leading role in approving or authoring essays, slogans and other media products to support the succession to power. The website is affiliated with the Stimson Center’s North Korea-focused news site 38 North in the United States.
In August 2009, Kim Jong-il sent a delegation led by Kim Ki-nam to the funeral ceremonies for former South Korean President Kim Dae-jung, who had recently died, in Seoul.
