Critics fear “Russian conditions”
There have been mass protests in Tbilisi for weeks because, according to its critics, the law would create “Russian conditions” in the former Soviet republic. Critics complain that the law is based on the Russian model and endangers the country’s EU prospects.
The law stipulates that organizations and media that are at least 20 percent financed from abroad must register with the authorities in Georgia as bodies that “pursue the interests of foreign powers”. Critics see this as having clear parallels to the law against “foreign agents” in Russia. This allows the authorities there to take massive action against critical media and organizations.
Obstacle to “European perspective”
An EU spokesman warned the government in Tbilisi shortly before the adoption that its adoption would represent “a serious obstacle to Georgia’s European perspective.” Georgia has officially been a candidate for EU membership since December.
