The British government announced on Tuesday that her sister’s survival was almost entirely thanks to Laurie’s extraordinary bravery. Laurie should now receive the so-called King’s Gallantry Medal for this. The two women were on an excursion to Mexico with others in 2021. A tourist guide mistakenly told them that it was safe to go swimming, the government statement said. Georgia Laurie’s sister then saw the crocodile in the water about 15 meters away.
During the desperate escape, the animal caught the sister. “It all happened very quickly,” Melissa Laurie told the BBC. She was pulled under the water and thought it was over.
Hit on crocodile
But her sister Georgia came to help. Georgia heard her sister’s cries for help, then found her unconscious in the water and brought her back to consciousness, the government wrote. The crocodile attacked again and dragged her sister away. Georgia Laurie hit the animal to free her sister. She suffered injuries because the animal bit her hand.
The women said in the BBC interview that Georgia then sang “Stand By Me” and “Don’t Worry About A Thing” to her sister to calm her down. When asked if she has always been so capable and calm, Georgia Laurie said she believes everyone has that strength within them. You just aren’t confronted with it in normal everyday life. But it is human nature to survive, protect and love one another.
