Sensation! Austria’s ice hockey team beats Olympic champion Finland

Austria celebrates a historic success over Finland.

The ÖEHV selection defeated Finland 3:2 (0:2.1:0.2:0) after being 0:2 behind thanks to a goal in the last second. After the first win over Finland in international history, a big step towards staying in the league was achieved with four points.

Roger Bader’s team was 0-2 behind thanks to goals from Saku Mänalanen (3rd) and Oliver Kapanen (9th). But the Austrians, confident from their historic comeback against Canada (6:7 nV), fought their way back against the overwhelming favorites. Mario Huber (24th) and Thimo Nickl (50th) equalized, Benjamin Baumgartner scored 0.2 seconds before the final siren to win. The game continues against World Cup hosts the Czech Republic on Friday (8:20 p.m./live ORF Sport +).

The Finns, who had already been warned, put a lot of pressure on in the first few minutes, created a few good chances and also converted two. Saku Mänalanen after strong forechecking (3rd) and Oliver Kapanen after Manuel Ganahl lost his target (9th) ensured a start according to the program. It was the 20-year-old Kapanen’s sixth goal of the tournament and he is once again leading the goalscoring list.

After around ten minutes, the Austrians, this time with a very strong David Kickert in goal, adjusted better to the Finns and appeared dangerous in front of goalkeeper Harri Sateri several times. At the beginning of the middle third, they scored the next goal after a nice combination against the strongest defensive team in the tournament so far. After an ideal pass from Thomas Raffl, Mario Huber shot into the short cross corner (24th). It was only the Finns’ second goal conceded in their fourth game. After that, her dominance was over.

Dwarf hits disallowed

The Austrians celebrated the equalizer at the beginning of the final third, but too early (45th). A power play goal from Dominic Zwerger was disallowed because Raffl was offside the goal area, and the video review after the Coaches Challenge didn’t change anything. But the red-white-red team didn’t let this disrupt their rhythm. In the 50th minute the tie was achieved when Nickl scored with a wrist shot into the top corner to make it 2-2.

Kickert kept his team in the game with strong saves, and the historic success was achieved almost as soon as the final siren sounded. Baumgartner pulled the trigger and scored – according to video review, the puck hit with 0.2 seconds left before the clock expired. The next sensation against a major ice hockey power was perfect. The only previous success against Finland was a 3-3 draw at the 2000 World Cup in St. Petersburg.
