A spokesman for the Nepalese Tourism Authority said it was a 53-year-old mountaineer from Mongolia who had been missing since the weekend. Sherpas found his body on Friday near the 8,849-meter-high peak, the head of his expedition company Eight K Expeditions, Lhakpa Sherpa, said.

The 53-year-old was on the highest mountain in the world with a 31-year-old compatriot who is currently missing. The duo had no local mountain guides. They had only booked oxygen bottles and support from the base camp from the expedition company. According to their own information, the expedition company last had contact with them on Sunday evening. At this point the two mountaineers were climbing.

419 Everest aspirants

In spring, a particularly large number of people attempt to climb the huge mountain in the Himalayas because that is when the conditions are usually best. The search operation for the two missing people was delayed for a few days due to bad weather, the authority spokesman said. For this year’s peak season, the authority issued 419 mountaineers with the necessary permit to climb Mount Everest.
