The young mother and the newborn were taken to a hospital, a police spokeswoman in Oswiecim told the PAP news agency on Friday. The baby had to be taken to the University Hospital in Krakow due to health complications.
Girl in stable condition
The group of students was housed in a rest home in Zator near Krakow. The 13-year-old felt bad on Wednesday evening and gave birth to the child in the accommodation’s washrooms, said the police spokeswoman. The girl’s teachers then called the police and ambulance. The young mother is being treated in the hospital in Oswiecim and her condition is stable.
Public prosecutor’s office is investigating
The public prosecutor’s office is now investigating an unknown person for sexual intercourse with a person under the age of 15. If the perpetrator is of legal age, he faces a prison sentence of between two and twelve years under Polish law. If he is not yet of legal age, the matter will be heard in a family court. According to the CIS statistics agency, there were 306,155 births nationwide in Poland in 2022, including 171 in which the mothers were 15 years old or younger.
