The city of Bordeaux, the economic center of the southwest of France, is undergoing dynamic development: thanks to the new high-speed train connection to Paris, the population has increased dramatically since 2016. In addition to traditional winegrowing, the metropolitan region is driving development in various areas such as the digital, defense and sustainability sectors. There is also an extensive urban development program as well as several historic and modern parks.
Reason enough for the Wels City Senate to choose Bordeaux as the destination for their annual trip abroad. On Tuesday and Wednesday, city politicians and expert municipal employees gathered inspiration for the future development of Wels in several parks and various projects. The focus was on the redesign of the Volksgarten and the State Garden Show 2027. The city’s tourism development is also remarkable, says Mayor Andreas Rabl (FP): “Bordeaux has managed to establish itself as a tourism metropolis – not just through the wine, for which it is “The city is well known. Numerous newly created attractions also play an important role.” This means that the city could be a role model for Wels despite the differences in size – the Bordeaux metropolitan area has 1.2 million inhabitants.
The “Bassins des Lumieres” are a big crowd-puller: the company “Culturespaces” has created a light and sound installation in a former submarine bunker in the port of Bordeaux. Animations with music are shown in complete darkness, bringing to life works by artists Vermeer, Van Gogh and Mondrian.
Light show on the Traun
Such a format could also work in Wels on a smaller scale and in a modified form, says Rabl: “We are considering showing a light show in the evenings at the new Volksgarten on the Traun, which can then be observed from the steps on the bank during evening events. The combination of light , music and water is very attractive, and that becomes clear in Bordeaux.”
