Georgian President vetoes “agent law”.

Georgian President Salome Zurabishvili

She explained that she had taken this step as announced, the Russian state news agency Tass reported on Saturday. However, the president can be overruled by another vote in parliament. There were massive protests across the country against the law.

The majority of MPs voted for the law on Tuesday. It stipulates that organizations that receive more than 20 percent of their funding from abroad must register as “agents of foreign influence.” Critics see parallels to a law in Russia with which the government takes action against the opposition and parts of society. The government in Tbilisi defends the project as strengthening transparency and national sovereignty.

Groundbreaking dispute

The dispute over the law is seen as a point of reference as to whether Georgia is working towards membership in the EU and NATO, as propagated by the ruling “Georgian Dream” party, or whether it wants to strengthen relations with Russia. The EU, which granted Georgia candidate status in December, has repeatedly said the law would pose an obstacle to the country’s further integration into the bloc. Russia has rejected any influence in the matter.
