The second individual time trial at the Giro is a clear matter for the former world champion Ganna. Nevertheless, Pogacar is getting closer and closer to his first overall victory.
Superstar Tadej Pogacar is racing away from the competition on his way to his first overall victory at the Giro d’Italia, but he was denied his fourth day’s success on Lake Garda.
In the second individual time trial, the Slovenian only had to admit defeat to the specialist and former world champion Filippo Ganna. The Italian was 29 seconds faster than Pogacar on the flat course over 31.2 kilometers between Castiglione delle Stiviere and Desenzano, but he remained well ahead of his rivals for former tour winner Geraint Thomas.
Pogacar, who triumphed against Ganna in the first fight against the clock, is now 3:41 minutes ahead of Thomas in the overall standings and 3:56 minutes ahead of the Colombian Daniel Felipe Martinez from the German Bora-hansgrohe team.
German drivers were unable to place in the top ten in the second individual time trial. Max Walscheid was able to convince in 15th place, 1:48 minutes behind Ganna.
On Sunday the Giro goes back to the high mountains. Between Manerba and the almost 2,400 meter high finish in Livigno, a demanding 5,400 meters of altitude await the professional cyclists. The Giro ends on May 26th in Rome.
