A climbing tour came to an early end on Saturday afternoon for three men from Vienna: The two Germans and the Austrian wanted to climb the Laserer Alpine via ferrata on the Vorderer Gosausee, which was not too long anyway. At least one of the three may have underestimated the difficulties to be expected.

The via ferrata, which climbs around 60 meters over just 420 meters, is rated “C” (difficult) and is considered a short Plaisir route with a beautiful view. It is particularly popular with tourists because of its unusual crossing, which runs on footholds directly above the water surface. It was precisely this so-called “nose crossing” in the first third of the climb that was the 38-year-old’s downfall. According to police, he became so panicked that he was no longer able to walk.
