There was no surprise. Defending champion Salzburg was able to feel like football champions for a little more than an hour on Sunday, but despite the 7:1 (3:1) victory over LASK, Sturm Graz’s late victory against Klagenfurt meant they were still knocked out in the title race by the Styrians their two-point lead to the finish and ended the Bulls’ championship series, which had triumphed ten times en suite.

On Salzburg’s side were Sekou Koita (7th, 71st), who left in the summer, Luka Sucic (8th, 61st/foul penalty), Strahinja Pavlovic (36th), Karim Konate (68th) and Dorgeles Nene (78th). into the shooter list. With 20 goals this season, the latter has the best chance of taking the top scorer’s crown, for which the remaining European Cup play-off games are also taken into account. LASK, who had already been cemented in third place, made things exciting at least in the short term thanks to Moses Usor (25th).
After saying goodbye to club icon Andreas Ulmer (582 games, 13 championship titles with Salzburg), the home team got off to a highly ambitious start in the last game under interim coach Onur Cinel and led 2-0 early on. First it was a “gurker” from LASK defender Filip Stojkovic on a powerful Koita shot, less than two minutes later Sucic followed up after a slightly deflected pass from Oscar Gloukh.
After that, it was mainly LASK that played for a short time. Although the supposed goal by Philipp Ziereis after a free kick was not given because of a foul by Marin Ljubicic on Pavlovic, shortly afterwards the time had come: Usor coldly exploited the gap in the exposed Bulls defense to shoot into the far corner. The finish of the first half once again belonged to Salzburg, who increased to 3-1 thanks to a Pavlovic header from a corner and thus secured the preliminary decision. Roko Simic’s 4-1 was overturned due to a narrow offside position (41′).
The Cinel team also demonstrated their hunger for goals in the second half, with Sucic making it 4-1 from the point after Ziereis fouled Konate. A little later, Simic and Konate missed a double top chance (65th), but around a minute later Konate let it ring from short distance.
Shortly afterwards, amidst the cheers, the news of Sturm’s leadership broke out. The Bulls still did their part and upped the ante thanks to Koita and Joker Nene. Ultimately, the success remained irrelevant. As runners-up, Salzburg now has to qualify for the Champions League for the first time since 2018. It is the first big challenge for new coach Pepijn Lijnders, who previously worked as Jürgen Klopp’s assistant at Liverpool.
