One pregnancy accelerates aging processes. Women’s biological clocks then tick faster. But this is only temporary; after the birth, these processes are reversed again. This is what scientists led by Kieran O’Donnel from the Yale Child Study Center in the USA found out and published the results of their work in the specialist journal “Cell Metabolism”.
“From the early to late period of pregnancy – i.e. for around 20 weeks – the biological age, which is determined by epigenetic processes, increases by around two years,” say the researchers. According to the experts, stress is the decisive factor. Serious injuries, surgical interventions or illnesses such as diabetes or high blood pressure also lead to such epigenetic changes.
