The trial against a 57-year-old man from Berlin was eagerly awaited on Tuesday. The public prosecutor’s office accuses the German of placing a wreath with the inscription “RIP-USA” in front of Adolf Hitler’s birthplace in Braunau on April 21, 2021. According to the prosecution, the abbreviation stood for “Rest in Peace” and “Our Blessed Adolf,” the Oberösterreichische Nachrichten reported.
However, the defendant did not attend yesterday’s jury hearing because of the crime of reactivation; only his defense attorney was present. “Unfortunately, my client was unable to come to Ried today for professional reasons.” He also received no summons. “But he will face the proceedings,” said the defense attorney to the presiding judge of the jury senate, Andreas Rumplmayr. “It is certainly not the case that the defendant can choose his date,” said the judge. “I think you should have some understanding here. After all, my client doesn’t come from the neighborhood,” said the lawyer.
Prosecutor Alois Ebner then also spoke up with a comment: “Well, on April 20, 2021 he apparently also managed to drive to Braunau to lay a wreath.” A new date has not yet been set, but the process is not expected to take place before autumn.
