This was announced by Slovenian Interior Minister Boštjan Poklukar at a press conference on Wednesday. With this step, Slovenia follows Italy, which is also extending its controls on the common border.
Increased security situation
The controls introduced last October and extended several times would have expired on June 22. The extension is justified this time, as was the case when the controls were introduced, with the increased security situation and terrorist threat in Europe. “Because the situation has not improved and the security situation in the Middle East continues to deteriorate, Slovenia will extend the controls for the next six months,” said Poklukar. Two major events in the EU this summer – the European Football Championship in Germany and the Olympic Games in France – require additional attention at the borders, according to the Interior Minister.
“No major traffic disruptions”
With a view to the summer tourist season, when a significant increase in travel is expected, Poklukar does not expect any major traffic disruptions due to the controls. “Based on experience from past Christmas and Easter holidays, when there were no major traffic jams, I believe that this will be the case now as well,” he said. According to the minister, the controls will be targeted as before.
Poklukar informed his counterparts in Croatia and Hungary about the extension by telephone on Wednesday. The EU Commission and the European institutions have also already been notified, it said.
